STRATFORD/LIAM JINKS CAPTURE FIRST SUPERLEAGUE TITLE

The weekly battle of our top four Island players concluded Tuesday evening with the final playoff matches. The focus was fully on the teams number one players, not only for the division of the '$650 prize money credit', but particularly for bragging rights of the top Island player after the fall season. The prize money will go as a credit to their costs incurred with attending the Mens National Teams event in Quebec in February 2019.

Both matches were run simultaneously with Nathan Phillips getting the best of Mitch Chaisson 3-1 in the third/forth playoff. Meanwhile the odds were 50/50 in the championship match as Mike Buchanan and Liam Jinks had split their two matches in the two previous encounters. The older Buchanan (by almost 20 years) got off to a slow start and went down quickly in the first game. But he wasted no time getting going in the second and showing Liam and the crowd that this was not to be an easy evening for the youngster. The second was long and tough, with Liam forced to save a couple of game balls in overtime and fortunately come off with a two game lead. The third was all Michaels’. He was on the ball early and forced Liam into several errors. It seemed at this point as if it would be anyone’s match until mid way in the fourth, but after three consecutive gruelling rallies in which the O’Leary #1 visited all the corners. The younger and apparently fitter of the two had left his mark. Mike could not keep up the pace and he and the O’Leary team had to be content with second place.

All players were in agreement, the new start-up league was great training for our top players. You can look for another session right after the holiday break and running until the team’s departure to Montreal in mid February.
